Bess beetles are extraordinarily simple to care for. I keep my bess beetle in a 9 liter 'Very Useful Box' from Office Depot, filled with an inch or so of coconut fiber, and a pile of decaying wood. The bess beetle requires basically no care at all in this setup. It eats the decaying wood, and enjoys the moist environment in the container. Bess beetles are very calm, and easy to handle. They lumber slowly, and when picked up, they wiggle a bit, but are not hard to hold onto. A bess beetle unused to being handled might squeak, which is funny to hear. I have read that the best wood to feed them is oak over pine, and I have personally have had success with soft, moist wood. So far my bess beetle has done very well though I have not done a thing but leave it on it's shelf with it's moist wood. I assume eventually it will it will run out of wood and require more, but other than that, if the beetle is in a container that stays moist, no other care is necessary. |
